The world functions in such a way that love must be shown and proven. Even in our walks with God, I don’t think I can really convince myself that God is good unless He proves to me that He is good. How can we even understand that concept that God is good? My love and appreciation for God is so conditional. If I get an A in this class God is good. If I can get this job then God is good. If my small group is free then God is good.
We declare at church that God is good all the time. But think about it… Is God really good all the time? Can we really say that God is good in the midst of our daily struggles? Is God good when He allows you to flunk an assignment? Can we really say that God is good when He allows good people to die? Is God good when His wrath is poured out upon people across the world? This is a pressing question, but I assure you that God is good. And God is good all the time!
Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
He is good!
The Bible tells us that He has all authority in heaven and on earth (John 17:2) and upholds all things by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3) and the very fact of our existence just shows that He is actively at work in His creation for Him, for in Him all things consist, exist, and hold together (Colossians 1:17). He didn’t just wind a clock and let Newton’s laws take over. He is still working in and through everything and without Him our world and everything we know of it would collapse.
Furthermore, what God promises us and what Paul reminds the church is that all things work together for good to those who love God (Romans 8:28) and that He provides us with all our needs (Philippians 4:19). He tells us that we always have all that we need in all things (2 Corinthians 9:8-11).
Therefore, God is good all the time. Maybe it is hard to see during the situation, but God doesn’t work for just our benefit, but so that we may bring Him glory and truly enjoy Him forever (Westminster Shorter Catechism, Question #1). Maybe it’s hard to see due to our human shortcomings, but brothers and sisters have faith that God is working for the greater good. He is actively working and He truly loves us. So whether we get an A or an F, land a job or become a stay at home child, or any other matter. God will be, has been, and is good.
So brothers and sisters of FiCB, remember that no matter what… God is good. All the time.
